Using 120 Volt and 240 Volt Lights

Monday, February 8, 2010 12:16:52 PM PST

Both 120 volt and 240 volt lights run with the same 100% output and use the same amount of electricity. A 1000 watt light uses the same amount of current in 120 volt as in a 240 volt light. The standard outlet in your house is 120 volt.

You may want to use a 240 volt if you plan on running several lights off of one circuit breaker. The maximum wattage on a 120 volt circuit is 1500 watts, per National Electric Code. With the proper breaker 240 volt circuits can carry up to 5760 watts. This means that you can plug several high powered lights into a timer or controller that will turn them all on and off on the same circuit. 240 volt is also considered to be more 'realistic' because it uses half the amounts of amps. Amps x Volts = Watts.

Every ballast uses a certain amount of amps depending on the size of the ballast. A typical circuit in a house will only be able to handle around 15 amps. This is the most beneficial part of using 240 volt ballast instead of 120 volt. A 240 volt ballasts use half of the amount of amps of its 120 volt counterpart. This will allow you to run more lights and watts while using the same number of amps.

Installing a 240 volt outlet is considered 'basic' electrical wiring and can be done on your own with the correct tools and some type of prior electrical knowledge or available literature. Electricity is very dangerous and wiring on your own should not be attempted unless it is done carefully and accurately. If you don't know what you are doing then you should hire a professional.

Sincerely,

Different Types of Grow Light Bulbs

Wednesday, January 27, 2010 10:06:12 AM PST

In this day and age each individual has been given the ability to assist Mother Nature in the complete control over the different growing seasons. Modern technology has allowed us to enhance and alter natural growth cycles with the use of Grow Lights. Metal Halide, High Pressure Sodium and Fluorescent T5 bulbs are all designed specifically to intensify and promote vigorous plant growth. Grow lights enable a gardener to utilize the optimal spectral energy that is needed in order to produce a more robust yield in a minimal amount of time.

High Pressure Sodium Grow Light Bulbs can be used for both the growing and blooming cycles, yet many individuals choose to run HPS bulbs only during the bloom cycle. On the other hand Metal Halide bulbs are solely to be used during the vegetative cycle of growth. The reasoning for this is that MH grow lights are precisely designed to provide a high initial and maintained blue springlike spectrum, and are not fully capable of providing the type of red spectrum that is necessary for a more plentiful budding cycle.

The T5 Fluorescent Bulbs are extremely energy efficient, yet are not nearly as powerful as the HPS and MH bulbs. T5 Grow Lights are ideal for seedlings, cuttings, flowers and houseplants. Like the HPS and MH bulbs, fluorescent grow lights are available in both red and blue spectrums.

Sincerely,

Hydro Pacific in Ukiah

Thursday, December 31, 2009 2:45:57 PM PST

Ukiah is a sweet little town on Highway 101 in Mendocino County, which is in Northern California. Last census there were about 15,000 people living in the city limits, plus a few thousands more who live remotely but work and shop, eat and party in Ukiah. Folks will tell you it’s a great place to raise kids because it’s safe and quiet. People who live here have a sense of loyalty to each other, and that helps get through hard economic times, not much rain, and the decades-long shift from timber to grapes as the mainstay of the county. We have a lot of pride in our valley, with its grapes and pears, and in the honest ingenuity that keeps the town alive and glowing.

One example of homegrown ingenuity is Hydro Pacific Gardening Supply. Jim Shaw and his wife raised five kids in the Ukiah Valley, big garden, homemade organic baby food and all. Now two daughters, Amanda and Angie, are partners with their father in realizing his dream of a store where organic gardeners can find damn near everything they need and most of what they want, all in one big place.

Well, two places. Last year they opened a second store for Angie in Cloverdale, another charming town thirty miles south, a beautiful drive on a good road that follows the Russian River all the way.

Both Hydro Pacific Gardening Supply stores display a dizzying array of tools, soil amendments, hydroponic nutrients and lights, greenhouses, climate controllers, natural pest controls, and things you never thought of.  They are staffed by friendly young people who mostly grew up gardening and are delighted to share what they know about the thousands of products offered by Hydro Pacific for 21st century vegetable gardening.

Now Hydro Pacific has a third presence, here on the internet. In January 2010 they launched their fancy new website, www.hydropacific.com, so no matter where you live, you can shop just like you were actually at Hydro Pacific. You can learn lots about herb gardening, indoor gardening, hydroponics, from the blogs and FAQs, email questions to the staff, and find in-depth information about all the products, and have them shipped right to your door.

Hydro Pacific is a real store with real people who stand by their products. You can find cheaper prices on thrown-together websites or in dank little stores that spring up along the road for a season or two. Or you can establish a long term relationship, season after season, with the real people at Hydro Pacific, and enjoy those intangibles that make it all good: a cheerful, helpful attitude, great service, product excellence – and loyalty.
